MEXICO – 10 DAYS / 9 NIGHTS

CancunDAY 1: MONTRÉAL - CANCUN

Flight from Montréal.
Arrival in CANCUN and transfer towards lodging in motor coach.
Dinner and night in Cancun.

DAY 2: CANCUN / TULUM / COBA / VALLADOLID

Breakfast at the hotel.
Discovery of TULUM’s archaeological site.
Tulum Tulum is small and beautiful. Geographically located on the banks of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Under the Mayan empire, Tulum was named Zama, or « Dusk City ». It is in fact a dreamed site to enjoy a sunrise over the sea. It as been renamed Tulum (meaning «fortress» in Mayan) because it has imposing fortifications on the sides and in front (5 to 7 meters high). Behind sparkles the sea, from where attacked the enemies of this civilization.

Lunch on your own.

Your second stop will be at the Coba ruins. It is without a doubt the largest Mayan city. Situated 50 km northwest of Tulum, Coba has preserved its ruins in the same state, almost without any restorations, and hidden in the depth of the tropical jungle.
Then on to Valladolid.

Chichen ItzaDAY 3: EK BALAM / CHICHEN ITZA

Breakfast at the hotel.

On the way back, stop at EK-BALAM to tour its archaeological site. Ek Balam (black jaguar), 20 km north of Valladolid, was the center of eastern Yucatan at the end of the classical period. It was characterised by three massive structures, the highest rising up to 31 m. It was fortified by two concentric walls.

Lunch on your own.

Then, it’s on to Chichen Itza, one hour away. It is one of the most important Mayan sites. The main building is « El Castillo ». Its head is decorated with Quetzacoatl’s symbol. Appreciate the ballroom and its high walls, walk along the sacred path to the Cenote Sagrado, the sacrificial well.
Return to Valladolid.

Izamal conventDAY 4: IZAMAL / MERIDA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure towards IZAMAL. This modern town is a seductive union of pre-Columbian relics and Spanish colonial buildings. We can still see a score of typical Mayan constructions like the imposing K’inich K’ak’mo pyramid, one of the largest in Yucatan. During Mayan times, this city was one of the most important religious sites. Izamal has become a center point for the conversion of the Mayans to Christianity by the Spaniards. Fray Diego de Landa founded the enormous convent and the church which now face the Plaza.

In the afternoon, pursue your road towards Yucatan peninsula’s capital, Merida.
This colonial city was built over its own ruins by Spanish conquistadors on January 6, 1542. Throughout the years, Merida has transformed into a city open to new ideas as well as to visitors. Its center is the Plaza Mayor, green and shady. The Plaza Mayor is surrounded by the famous cathedral and its twin towers dating back to the 16th century, the National Palace and the Casa Montejo which was built in 1549 by the region’s conquistador, Francisco de Montejo. Merida is famous for its atmosphere and lively markets where you can find local craft and products.

Cenotes de CuzamaDAY 6: CUZAMA (CENOTES)

Breakfast at the hotel.

Start your day with Cuzama’s Cenotes. One of the charms that distinguish Yucatan’s peninsula is the cenotes which name comes from the Mayan « dzonot », meaning water filled cavity. The cenotes are world unique underground rock formations. In addition to being a primordial source of water in the jungle, they are sacred grounds for the Mayans who thought they were entries for the spiritual world.

Lunch on your own.

In the afternoon, you’ll go to the Sisal Hacienda. Traveling through Yucatan’s henequen haciendas is incredible. In former times, these places were the basis and the lifeblood of the region’s economy and today, they preserve this lifestyle’s heritage.

Dinner and night in Merida.

Loltun cavesDAY 7: LABNA / KABAH / LOLTUN / UXMAL

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning, you’ll discover LABNA, famous for its arch, the most spectacular and renown constructions of the site. Formerly a part of a building linking two courtyards, it is decorated of many Chac masks and of two representations of Mayan cottages.

Lunch on your own.

Then, departure for KABAH, in order to see the big monument that is the Codz Poop. This site is decorated with more than 250 masks depicting the crooked nosed Mayan rain god named Chac.

Road towards Uxmal.
In the evening, you’ll witness a light and sound show in Uxmal.

UxmalDAY 8: UXMAL / CANCUN

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning, tour UXMAL. Located in the Puuc Mountains, UXMAL was one of the most important cities of the late classical period. The history of the city is uncertain but most of the buildings date back to the 7th - 10th centuries, time when Uxmal dominated the entire region.

Transfer towards Cancun.

Dinner and night in Cancun.

Isla MujeresDAY 9: CANCUN

Breakfast at the hotel.

NO TRANSPORTATION OR TOUR GUIDE FOR THE DAY.

Free day to enjoy the beach.
OPTION: Possibility of a one-day excursion including lunch towards Isla Mujeres. You will be able to do a many activities: cycling, games, raffle and diving (equipment non-included, available on-site).

DAY 10: CANCUN / MONTRÉAL

Transfer to the airport in Cancun.
